SUBJ: Okay, enough gushing about the class already...

I offer no exaggeration when I say that I am happier than I have been in months because of meeting you. I'm not sure if you realize how much hope you've given me. I wandered from job to job just trying to exist while pursuing my acting, but you showed me how to earn money doing what I love and that for which I was trained.

However, I have to say the best part of the night was not the information you gave, but your joy at giving it. You really like what you do, and that's rare enough, but your willingness to share access to such a lucrative career is rarer still. Know that you are amazing.

As it is now, I'm dusting off my degree and working on my resume with the hopes that I can start making contact calls very soon. I'm not going to quit my night job quite yet, but the weight of dependence on it as my primary source of income is a lighter burden to bear. Now my mind is full of your compliments and my time line for success.

Thank you for your generosity of time over the past few weeks and for the new sense of hope in my life. I would also like to thank you for your offer of a 15-minute consult, and once I get my resume and more questions formulated, I would appreciate your input.

That something as simple as a $50 class could turn my life around is not to be believed, but I'm very, very glad I was present. I can't thank you enough.

Call me if you need a kidney.

Sincerely,

Samantha Adams

Sue:

The process of my getting paid to read books began with the idea that pursuing my passion would bring more meaning (and more money) into my life. I had been working at home as a proofreader and medical transcriptionist for two years when I met Sue Gilad. I loved the independence a home-based business brought me, but I still wasnít doing exactly what I wanted to do. I had been an avid reader all my life, and one day I came up with a powerful question: I wonder if there is a way I can get paid to read books? The answer was an equally powerful yes! Since I already had editorial experience, I started by telling everyone I knew that I was now proofreading books. One of my friends, a career adviser, had just written a set of e-workbooks, and I proofed those for her free of charge. I had hardly finished those when I got a call from an author saying he needed a proofreader for his book, which would be published within the year. My career adviser had referred him to me, and he became my first client. Itís an exciting time for my home business. Since I love reading books, networking is funóI get to talk to others who love books! And for the first time in my career, I am getting paid (and paid well) to do something I love to do, when I want to do it.

Marcela Vargas

Hello, Sue!

I wanted to tell you what I came away with from your seminar. Besides all the information you provided, I came away with the importance of being as truthful as possible. Being courteous, respectful, generous were also very important. And lastly, ALWAYS meet your deadlines! Did I get everything?

I think you did a magnificent job. One of the things I find extremely important when attending a lecture is the lecturer's presence. You had PLENTY of presence, no doubt thanks to your theatre experience. The other thing is that the information be presented as clearly and concisely as possible. Yup, check on that one too.

So tonight I stopped by the Borders bookstore closest to home. I stopped by the customer service desk and asked if there were any books on how to become a proofreader for the publishing houses. Well, I'm sure you knew it, but just in case you didn't - there aren't any! So I have every confidence that your book will do really well! That and the information you've got is great. If your personality comes across in your book - as I'm sure it will - it's gonna sell like hotcakes.

Thank you so much for coming out to Southern California and teaching us what you know. And thanks for taking the time to read this. I know you're terribly busy with your growing family, your work, and publishing your book. And I'd like to thank you in advance for any help you can give me. I'm well aware that you've probably received quite a few e-mails from the people in your seminars, so thanks a million!

Take care of yourself!

Warm Regards,
Marcela Vargas

603CLA A 08/26/2004 02:32:28 2

Sue was incredible especially, having a 2-month-old in the wings waiting for her. She has a funny sense of humor, and has a lot of great info. It was interesting that she shared her rocky beginnings, her mistakes, so that we might be better. You might consider a part two class with more hands on, samples in class. Thank you for making this class available.
603CLA A 08/26/2004 02:36:23 2

What a great and informative class!! I learned soooo much! My only regret is that I couldnít tape it because I would like to further the learning process by replaying the experience as a lot of us auditory learners must do. Do you ever sell tapes?

Please forward any future emails from Sue to me regarding proofreading business. Sincerely, Walt Clyne

San Diego feedback:

Of the Learning Annex classes Iíve taken, this one had the most usable content. The instructor obviously works in the industry and was able to pass along practical inside tips. Iím quite pleased with Ms. Giladís openness and the content of the course. I got everything I expected and more! 603CSD A 08/27/2004 01:39:12 2

The teacher, Sue Gilad, was excellent. She really kept the subject interesting, and she answered everyoneís questions in the audience and there were a lot of them! Please invite her to come back. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 01:51:47 2

I loved this class. I might actually see myself changing careers after tonight. The good thing is you can start this while still working at your current job. Sue was a good communicator. She took questions, repeated them out loud for all to hear and answered them clearly. Time flew. I have no problem with you sharing these comments with the instructor or others. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 01:54:32 2

Excellent! 603CSD A 08/27/2004 02:00:53 2

Sue was a vivacious and enthusiastic instructor who clearly loves what she does. It was a pleasure to listen to her presentation. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 02:10:02 2

Iím very excited about the prospects offered in this seminar! And, that the speaker is so open without selling books, etc. A big difference from the Britten one about changing life in 30 days without any info to do so, but a big push for her books. Most refreshing!!! 603CSD A 08/27/2004 02:26:40 2

Instructor was high energy and generally did a good job. The course title once I showed up was different (and more descriptive) than the title I signed up for. It would be best for Learning Annex to make its seminar titles as specific as possible. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 02:35:57 2

One of the best classes Iíve taken. Not only does Sue know the subject, her presentation was outstanding! 603CSD A 08/27/2004 10:32:15 2

She was engaging and gave LOTS of good information. She made it seem really possible. Most excellent instructor and class. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 10:32:50 2

The class was great. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 11:05:14 2

The most informative, most organized, most practical class of yours Iíve ever taken. The instructor really gave us what she promised. Unfortunately, not all of your classes have done this. She also had a lively, charming way of presenting the material. Kept us engaged. Excellent! 603CSD A 08/27/2004 11:58:52 2

The instructor made a great connection with the participants, and fielded questions very effectively. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 12:38:40 2

There is finally hope in my life. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 12:38:52 2

Instructor made process actually seem doable and realistic unlike other classes I have taken. Her willingness for follow up was refreshing. The room in which the class was held was musty and damp smelling. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 14:29:57 2

Great presenter, with a world of knowledge. Very, very helpful seminar. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 18:31:39 2

The instructor was one of my favorites through Learning Annex. She had great knowledge of the topic and really gave specifics that were usable, but also gave us several choices of how to approach the same thing. She also provided some good examples and had a great sense of humor, which made the class more interesting. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 19:09:55 2

Suzanne is a great speaker, quite knowledgeable, and the information provided was definitely useful. 603CSD A 08/27/2004 19:10:00 2

The class was even better than I expected. It was extremely informative and inspirational. I canít wait to start a new career in proofreading. Our instructor was very helpful and had a great sense of humor. In her own words, the class was ďdelicious.Ē 603CSD A 08/27/2004 20:54:41 2

Suzanne knew her topic, was passionate about it, and taught the material to her students in a way that was entertaining. I look forward to trying her methods to supplement my income. 603CSD A 08/28/2004 08:41:01 2

One of the most inspirational classes Iíve taken. Iím all fired up! 603CSD A 08/28/2004 13:05:00 2

The speaker presented a lot of practical information about getting started in the field of proofreading. Her presentation was also very entertaining and she was responsive to attendeesí questions. I also like the fact that we can keep in touch with her by email. This was one of the best classes I have gone to....so much info in so little time. 603CSD A 08/28/2004 13:11:09 2

Excellent Class very well presented. 603CSD A 08/28/2004 13:57:18 2

Instructor is wonderful, so enthusiastic! Loved this class and hope it will be useful to me in the very near future.

FLEXIBILITY

When my son was 3 months old, we hopped on a plane to Miami for a quick vacation. I packed a proofread with me: Jonathan Kellerman’s latest thriller. There is nothing better than sitting under an umbrella on the beach, my son frolicking with my sister, as I read a fabulous suspense story—one that paid for the entire trip. That is the spirit of being a freelancer.

A FREE EDUCATION

I’m a Jeopardy! freak. After I started proofreading, I noticed that since I’ve been reading a little bit about a lot of things, I get so many more questions right . . . and faster than the contestants on the show. I plan on getting a slot on Jeopardy! next year. Brad Rutter won over a million dollars in 2002. I’m going to beat that. I’m completely serious.

SHOW ME THE MONEY

It’s a great little secret, my proofreading. I am a writer, which heaven knows is anything but steady. But between writing gigs, I get to read other writers’ work . . . and make money doing it! It’s like getting paid to do research for my own writing career . . . plus, it covers my rent every month and then some.

SO, WHAT IS IT?

I wish there had been a proofreading program in school so that I would have known about this sooner. I don’t have to answer to anybody, I can read all day in my pajamas and fuzzy slippers, and I have such a comfortable work environment—my home. Who knew?
